Antique Stone

19th Century Industrial Millstone

Made of limestone, this larger than average diameter stone served in a vertical position on a large, probably wooden shaft, that maintained momentum of water powered machinery while driving leather belting to turn other equipment. The outside circumference of the stone is knurled to assist in non-slip of the utilized belt as it turned (see photos). Stone is a healthy 62” diameter x 11” thick. The center hole is 27” diameter and may have been enlarged for use as a well cover. An old season crack exists which does not compromise the stones’ integrity. The light colored staining seen is from another stone that was leaned against it for a period of time……..that will diminish with time.
