Gristmill Ballast Stone

19th Century limestone measures 26” diameter x 6” thick with a 5” x 5” square center hole. The entire outer edge circumference has a 3/8” wide groove. These stones were used on the drive shaft of a gristmill to assist in balance and to reduce “rumble”/vibration. The channel was attached to a rope or belt to drive another piece of equipment while the grist was being produced. Nothing wasted !!
